• A male summer fishfly's antennae are so elaborately branched they look like two feathered ferns glued to his head — each branch packed with sensory organs tuned to detect the pheromones of females from up to 100 metres away. He never eats. His entire adult life, sometimes just 10 days, is spent flying in search of a mate through the darkness, guided only by chemistry and the memory of where he was born.
• The larvae of summer fishflies are aquatic assassins that spend 2–3 years hidden in stream gravel, breathing through gills while hunting aphids and tiny organisms in the current. When the time comes to transform, they crawl out of the water, shed their skin on a rock or log, and emerge with wings — a metamorphosis so abrupt it happens in a single night.
• Unlike most aquatic insects, summer fishfly larvae are carnivorous hunters with elongated bodies and powerful jaws. They are among the few freshwater predators that actively pursue prey rather than filter or ambush, making them a keystone species for stream health — their presence signals clean, oxygenated water that can support complex food webs.
