Subtropical Lady

Fascinating facts about the Subtropical Lady

• Vanessa carye spans a latitudinal range of ∼7,000 km, yet geometric morphometrics detected no geographic differentiation in wing shapes and sizes across that distance. This conserved wing design lets the species fly efficiently over vast stretches, supporting its status as a true long-distance migrant and showing how a single wing blueprint can power the longest migratory journey among American butterflies.
• Two genetic populations stretch 5,000 km yet share almost identical DNA. The study found V. carye forms a genetically homogeneous unit composed of only two potential populations spanning ∼5,000 km, geographically linked to the Pacific Ocean and the Andes, with constant gene flow and a mean heterozygosity of 5.74% (SE: ±0.048%). Such low genetic divergence across a continent-wide range indicates that migration continuously mixes individuals, preventing regional splits and preserving a single gene pool.
• A South-American butterfly also lives on Easter Island. Vanessa carye is found in South America, from the mountains of Colombia and west of Caracas (Venezuela) through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, southern Brazil, and Paraguay to Patagonia in Argentina, and it is also found on Easter Island and Tuamotus.
• Two migratory highways guide its continental trek. Our findings support V. carye as a migratory species with the longest migratory journey among American butterflies, revealing two migratory routes. One corridor follows the Pacific coastline while the other tracks the Andes and maintain the genetic unity described in the study.
• Caterpillars munch on Achyrocline flaccida. The larvae feed on Achyrocline flaccida and many other species,
