• A caterpillar the size of a grain of rice spends its entire larval life underground, never seeing daylight until it emerges as a moth — yet it somehow knows exactly when to pupate before winter arrives. Feltia subterranea larvae live in the soil eating grass roots, their only clock the temperature of the earth around them. Scientists still don't fully understand how they time their transformation so perfectly in complete darkness.
• The adult moth is small enough to fit on your thumbnail, but it ranges across an entire continent — from the pine forests of Massachusetts to the deserts of California and down into Mexico. This 8-millimetre insect survives climates that swing from freezing winters to scorching summers, suggesting a genetic flexibility that researchers have barely studied. Most of what we know about this species comes from agricultural damage reports, not from biology.
• The caterpillar is a cryptic pest that hides so completely underground that farmers often don't know they have an infestation until their crops fail. Unlike caterpillars that skeletonise leaves or spin webs, Feltia subterranea larvae sever grass stems below the soil surface and drag them down to eat in the dark. By the time damage is visible above ground, the larvae are already below the reach of most pesticides.
