• A spotted orbweaver spins a new web almost every night — tearing down yesterday's silken trap and rebuilding from scratch in the dark. The web itself is stronger than steel of the same thickness, yet weighs less than a grain of salt. They taste with their feet, detecting vibrations through silk strands thinner than human hair, and can tell the difference between a mosquito (meal) and a leaf (trash) before their legs even touch it.
• Female spotted orbweavers lay up to 900 eggs inside a papery sac no bigger than a pea, then guard it through winter without eating — a fast that lasts months. The mothers die as soon as spring arrives and the babies hatch. Researchers have found that females who guard their eggs produce stronger, better-fed spiderlings than those who abandon theirs, even though they never live to see it.
• The spotted orbweaver's vision works almost like ours — they see in color and depth — yet their brain is the size of a sesame seed. They can recognize individual human faces and remember which humans fed them and which ones threatened them. A spider that weighs less than a paperclip outthinks most animals with brains a million times larger.
• Spotted orbweavers sit motionless in the hub of their web for hours, waiting. The instant a mosquito lands — within milliseconds — the spider rushes across strands, wraps the prey in silk from a built-in spindle, and returns to the center. They can perform this sequence while the prey is still struggling, in near-total darkness, without ever miscounting their steps or taking a wrong turn.
• These spiders expanded their range northward by over 500 km in the last 50 years as North American winters warmed. Once confined to the southern United States, spotted orbweavers now breed successfully in Minnesota and the Great Lakes region. Their northward march is one of the clearest signs of how climate change is reshaping where animals live, written in silk across a warming continent.
