Spinybacked Orbweaver

Fascinating facts about the Spinybacked Orbweaver

• Female spinybacked orbweavers pack a surprising bulk into a tiny frame, measuring just 5-9 mm long yet spreading 10-13 mm wide, they carry six sharp abdominal spines that make them look like miniature sea-crabs. Males shrink dramatically to only 2-3 mm.
• These spiders live on a single-use clock: they die right after reproducing. After a winter-born spider reaches adulthood, it spends only a few weeks maturing, then the female builds an egg sac holding 100 to 260 eggs before she perishes. Males survive just six days after completing sperm transfer. This semelparous life-history funnels all energy into one massive reproductive burst, making each individual a fleeting but crucial seed for the next generation.
• Unlike most animals that follow a 24-hour day, Gasteracantha cancriformis runs on a 19-hour rhythm, breaking the usual night-day pattern. This abnormal circadian cycle places it among the rare few complex organisms that are neither strictly nocturnal nor diurnal.
• Spinybacked orbweavers love the fringe of forests and garden shrubs, often nesting just 1 to 6 meters above ground. They are also comfortable sharing space with the massive colonies of Metepeira incrassata, slipping onto the edges of these hundreds-to-thousands-strong webs.
• Native from the southern United States through Central America to the Caribbean and South America, Gasteracantha cancriformis has even hitchhiked to places like Hawaii. Its broad range across temperate and tropical zones means it encounters a huge variety of insect pests, especially in citrus groves where it helps farmers by catching flies, whiteflies, and beetles. In this way, the tiny spider acts as a natural pest-control ally across continents.
