Southern Eagle Ray

Fascinating facts about the Southern Eagle Ray

• Off the coast of Australia, a diver can spot a Southern Eagle Ray gliding over the sand, its 1.8-meter wingspan casting a shadow bigger than a coffee table, as it hunts for clams and worms at speeds of up to 40 km/h. This speed is crucial, for it needs to eat 2-3 times its body weight daily. Its size and appetite reveal a delicate balance in the marine ecosystem.
• Southern Eagle Rays can live up to 15 years in the wild, during which they may travel over 1,000 km in search of food and mates, guided by the Earth's magnetic field. This ability to navigate long distances without visual cues is shared with some sea turtles and sharks, underlining the sophistication of their spatial awareness.
• In a single year, a Southern Eagle Ray can consume over 200 kg of clams, making it a pivotal species in maintaining the balance of the seafloor ecosystem. Without these rays, clam populations could explode, affecting the entire food chain, from fish to dolphins. Their role underscores the intricate web of marine life.
• A Southern Eagle Ray's spine is lined with 30-50 venomous barbs, used for defense against predators like sharks and dolphins. These barbs are modified dentine, the same material as human teeth, and can cause painful wounds. Yet, despite this potent defense, Southern Eagle Rays are still vulnerable to overfishing and habitat destruction.
• Southern Eagle Rays are ovoviviparous, meaning they produce eggs that hatch inside the mother's body, and she gives birth to live young, typically 2-4 pups per litter, after a gestation period of around 12 months. This reproductive strategy is rare among fish, highlighting the complex life cycles that exist in the ocean, and the need for conservation efforts to protect these remarkable reproductive patterns.
