About the Silver Sweep

The silver sweep (Scorpis lineolata) cuts a sleek figure on the reefs of the southwestern Pacific, its deep, laterally compressed body cloaked in a gradient of grey-blue to green-grey above and a shimmering silver underside. A short snout frames large, keen eyes, while a modest, oblique mouth houses bands of strong, recurved teeth, an adaptation for snatching planktonic morsels from the water column. Its dorsal fin runs the length of the back, beginning with a diminutive spine that gives way to ten progressively taller spines and a long soft-rayed section of 26-28 rays, creating an almost straight silhouette. Paired pectoral and pelvic fins are modest, the former’s uppermost rays extending slightly farther, and the anal fin mirrors the dorsal with three spines and 27-28 soft rays. At up to 30 cm (12 in), this silver-grey fish darts among coastal reefs down to at least 50 m (160 ft), forming shimmering schools that feed on drifting plankton. Juveniles begin life in tide pools and brackish estuaries before migrating to the reef’s rocky ledges, where adults spawn in winter, peaking from May to August. Their pelagic eggs drift with currents, giving rise to rapid growth in the first few years, a burst that slows dramatically after sexual maturity, yet individuals can live beyond five decades. A surprising trait is their longevity: despite a fast-start growth phase, silver sweeps may outlive many reef fishes, persisting through changing oceanic conditions while maintaining separate sexes throughout their life cycle.
