• Adult green turtles can stretch to the length of a small car, reaching 1.5 metres (5 ft) long, while most weigh between 68 kg and 190 kg. Exceptional individuals tip the scales at 315 kg, and the heaviest recorded specimen tipped 395 kg and measured 153 cm (60 in) across its carapace. Those that survive to adulthood may live up to 90 years in the wild.
• Green sea turtles are the only sea turtles that turn fully herbivorous as adults, swapping a carnivorous hatchling diet for a lifelong love of seagrass. Their short, unhooked beak and serrated jaws are built to shear tough algae, a trait that sets them apart from relatives like the hawksbill. This dietary switch not only colors their fat green but also drives a slower growth rate, linking their unique physiology directly to the health of coastal seagrass meadows.
• Florida alone recorded over 37,000 green turtle nests in 2015, the highest count ever documented, highlighting the state's critical role as a breeding hotspot.
