• The caterpillar eats only Prunus trees — cherry, plum, apricot, peach — and starves rather than switch plants. This extreme pickiness means adult swallowtails can only lay eggs where these specific trees grow, tying their entire life cycle to a narrow slice of European and Asian geography. It's a strategy that works until that food plant vanishes.
• Adult scarce swallowtails have elongated hind wing tails that serve no obvious aerodynamic purpose — yet they're present in nearly every swallowtail species. Recent research suggests these tails may act as a predator decoy: when a bird strikes, it hits the tail extension instead of the body, giving the butterfly a split-second chance to escape. A missing tail is survivable; a missing head is not.
• At 70–100 millimetres across, a scarce swallowtail is nearly twice the wingspan of a common cabbage white. Yet it's still considered 'scarce' across most of Europe — not because it's rare where it appears, but because its range is fragmented into isolated populations separated by kilometres of unsuitable habitat, each pocket living almost independently.

• Newly hatched caterpillars are cannibal: when multiple eggs hatch on the same Prunus leaf, the first to emerge will hunt and eat its siblings. This brutal start means only one or two caterpillars typically survive per leaf, but each survivor gets an entire plant's worth of food, growing into a larger, stronger adult butterfly with better chances of flight and reproduction.
