• A male scarce copper's wings flash orange-red in sunlight, but only when he tilts them at precisely the right angle — the colour vanishes entirely in shadow. This iridescence isn't made from pigment but from the microscopic architecture of his wing scales, each one a stack of transparent layers that bend light like a prism. Females are dull brown by contrast, invisible against the meadow floor where they lay eggs. Evolution has handed males and females opposite survival tools: males court with light shows; females hide.
• Scarce coppers vanish from meadows for nearly a year as pupae, encased inside rolled dock leaves where they're sealed by silk threads spun by the caterpillar before it transformed. In spring, a single butterfly emerges from the chrysalis — but only if the meadow hasn't been mown or grazed too hard in winter. One machine pass, one livestock trampling, and entire generations disappear. • Male scarce coppers engage in aerial duels that last seconds but matter for mating rights: two males spiral upward in a tight helix, each trying to flip the other onto its back. The winner claims territory over a patch of flowering dock — sometimes just 10 square metres — and will patrol it for hours, chasing away rivals and intercepting females. A single meadow might host dozens of invisible kingdoms, each defended by a butterfly smaller than a postage stamp.
• In the Alps and Carpathians, scarce coppers are climbing higher every decade, moving to cooler meadows at higher elevation as summers warm. Since 1990, populations in some regions have shifted upslope by 100 metres per decade — the equivalent of a human walking uphill for their entire life. Eventually, there will be nowhere left to climb. This butterfly is a living barometer of climate change, and its slow retreat marks the moment when mountains run out of cool air.
