• The satanic leaf-tailed gecko reaches a maximum total length of about 90 mm, making it the smallest-bodied member of its genus. Its diminutive size has sparked discussion among herpetologists, who wonder if the closely related U. ebenaui might actually be smaller because that species carries a proportionally shorter tail. Both species share the same flat, leaf-like tail shape, but the overall body length of U.
• Some individuals of U. phantasticus develop notches along the edge of their already flattened tails, a modification that makes the appendage resemble a decaying leaf stuck to a branch. This subtle irregularity enhances their camouflage when they remain motionless on bark or foliage. Observations indicate the trait occurs more frequently in males, leading researchers to propose it as a form of sexual dimorphism within the species.
• Each eye of the satanic leaf-tailed gecko is topped by a fine, eyelash-like projection that breaks up the outline of the head against surrounding foliage.
