Fascinating facts about the Riband Wave

• A single riband wave stretches only 30-35 mm from wing tip to tip, yet its wing pattern reads like a miniature map. The buff-cream background is crossed by dark fasciae, with three forewing and two hindwing crosslines that create a striking lattice. Two forms appear in equal numbers: one darker between the central bands, the other (ab. remutata) lighter. This modest size combined with bold markings makes it instantly recognizable at night-lit windows.
• The riband wave blankets most of Europe, the Near East and North Africa, from the Iberian Peninsula to the far reaches of Siberia and Japan. Its northern limit stops at northern Sweden and northern Finland, while the far-eastern edge reaches north-east China. A tiny, isolated pocket lives in southern Turkey.
• Adult riband waves take to the night sky from June to August, drawn to artificial lights that make them easy to spot on porch lamps. In the British Isles this flight window, though it may shift elsewhere. Their larvae munch on common weeds such as bedstraw, chickweed, dandelion and knotgrass, then hunker down to overwinter as tiny caterpillars.
• Riband wave caterpillars are stout and slightly flattened, sporting a puckered lateral ridge and a small reddish-brown head dusted with black. Their bodies are rugose, with transverse folds and a dull brown hue, while the last four abdominal segments turn ochre-tinged. A whitish dorsal line runs faintly along the thorax and rear, bordered by darker shading and occasional V-shaped brown marks.
