Fascinating facts about the Riband Wave

• The riband wave's caterpillars are specialist lichen-eaters — they've evolved to digest compounds that would poison most other insects. This means they can thrive in bare, nutrient-poor grasslands where competitors starve, making them one of Europe's most successful moth species across a range spanning from Britain to Japan.
• At rest, this moth becomes invisible. Its wings flatten against grass stems in a tent-like pose, and the wave pattern — dark and light stripes running across the wings — perfectly mirrors the lichen-covered bark and stone around it. A predator looking directly at one might never see it.
• The riband wave produces two or three generations per year depending on how far north it lives. In the cool Scottish Highlands, caterpillars crawl through moss in early summer and lay pupae that sleep through winter. In warmer southern Europe, a third generation emerges in autumn before the cold arrives.
• During the Industrial Revolution, populations in Manchester and other soot-covered cities shifted from pale to dark within 50 years — a textbook case of evolution in action. As air pollution blackened tree bark, the pale form became visible to birds and was hunted down. When clean air laws arrived in the 1970s, the dark moths began disappearing again.
• Female riband waves release a chemical perfume — a pheromone — that males can detect from 200 metres away on a still night. A single female's scent plume draws dozens of males through the darkness, each one beating his wings 40 times per second to follow an invisible trail to her.
