• The red-fronted lemur inhabits the western coast of Madagascar, occupying the strip between the Tsiribihina River in the north and the Fiheranana River in the south. It also extends across an eastern corridor bounded by the Mangoro and Onive Rivers and reaching the Andringitra Massif. Within this range the species prefers dry lowland forest habitats, where it finds the resources it needs to survive.
• Males of this species are distinguished by striking white or cream coloured cheeks and beards, while females display rufous or cream cheeks and have beards that are noticeably less bushy. This sexual dimorphism is set against a gray overall coat, a black face, muzzle and forehead, and a black line running from the muzzle to the forehead, complemented by white eyebrow patches.
• Across all studied populations, red-fronted lemur groups lack any clear dominance hierarchies, and aggressive encounters are rare. Group sizes remain fairly consistent, typically ranging from four to eighteen individuals and averaging eight to nine members. This social structure means that individuals coexist with relatively low tension, allowing the groups to focus on foraging and other daily activities without the pressure of rank-based competition.
