• A red-bellied lemur's belly isn't just coloured — it's a social billboard. The brighter the belly, the healthier the male, and other lemurs read this colour signal like a dominance ranking. It's a visual shout that requires no energy beyond standing still.
• Unlike almost every other primate, female red-bellied lemurs run the troop. They eat first at kills, claim the best sleeping spots, and their daughters inherit rank from them — a system so rigid that a low-ranking female can watch her own mother eat while she waits.
