About the Rainbow Skink

The delicate skink, Lampropholis delicata, dazzles the eye with a sleek, medium-length body and a slender, often striped tail that shimmers in garden light. Its back and sides range from grey-brown to rich brown, speckled with darker and paler flecks, and a narrow yellow-brown stripe may trace the outer edge of the back. Though males tend to have broader, longer heads and a less pronounced stripe, the species exhibits both prominent and subtle white-striped morphs that are not strictly gender-linked. Native to eastern Australia’s moist woodlands, sclerophyll forests, and rainforests, this skink has found a new niche in suburban gardens, where leaf litter provides the open, thermally favorable microhabitats it prefers. Diurnal and terrestrial, it prowls the litter and low vegetation, employing both active-foraging and sit-and-wait tactics to capture a diet of spiders, bees, larvae, termites, and other arthropods, adapting swiftly when fire or drought reshapes prey availability. One of its most surprising traits is its capacity for caudal autotomy: when threatened, it can shed its tail at any vertebral fracture plane, a defense that triggers spinal-cord-driven regeneration, replenishing not only length but also fat reserves essential for survival.
