• A pied kingfisher can hover above water like a hummingbird, beating its wings up to 10 times per second while scanning for fish below. The moment it spots movement, it folds its wings and plummets at 60 km/h—a free-fall with zero margin for error. If the dive fails, it'll take off and try again within seconds, sometimes 100+ times a day. Most kingfishers perch and wait; pied kingfishers hunt like tiny aerial robots.
• Males and females wear almost identical plumage, but there's a crucial difference: males have two black breast bands, females have one. So common is this dimorphism that researchers use it as a field ID without binoculars. Evolution has optimised recognition down to a single line of feathers—clarity matters when you're choosing a mate in a split-second courtship.
• Pied kingfishers are the only kingfishers that regularly hunt in small flocks, diving in loose groups above the same stretch of water. • Pied kingfishers nest in burrows they excavate into riverbanks or cliffs, chiselling through soil and rock using their beaks as tools. What's rare: males often stay and help raise the chicks after mating, and sometimes previous offspring return to assist younger siblings. In a few populations, three generations of the same family have been recorded breeding in neighbouring burrows in the same season—a form of kinship cooperation almost unheard of among kingfishers.
