• The caterpillar wears a living chemical weapon—when threatened, it pushes out a pair of bright orange tentacles called osmeterium that release a smell like rotting fruit, so repulsive that many predators abandon the hunt immediately. A handful of wasps have evolved to ignore the stench and attack anyway, turning an evolutionary arms race between butterfly and wasp into a game of chemical bluff.

This vulnerability—suspended in open air—is when parasitic wasps find them most easily; perhaps one-third of all pupae never emerge as adults.
• Adult males patrol the edges of swamps and creeks in the afternoon, seeking females through a behaviour called 'puddling,' where dozens gather on damp sand to absorb minerals. These congregations are predictable enough that butterfly enthusiasts know exactly where to find them between April and October.
• Its namesake, Palamedes, was a hero in Greek mythology who could never rest—doomed to constantly search. The butterfly mirrors this restlessness: it can produce two to three generations per year in the Deep South, meaning some individual butterflies live only 2 to 3 weeks before dying, having raised the next generation that will face an increasingly hostile landscape of missing host plants.
