Fascinating facts about the Painted Lady

• British painted ladies fly a 14,500 km (9,000 mi) round-trip from tropical Africa to the Arctic Circle, but they don't do it in one go, up to six successive generations take turns. High-altitude wind streams lift them so high that most observers never see the journey, yet radar data prove the migrations happen far above the ground.
• In 2024 scientists proved a painted lady crossed an ocean, riding trade winds from Africa to South America for over 2,600 miles (4,200 km), one of the longest recorded insect journeys. Butterflies caught on a French Guiana beach carried West African pollen, and isotope tests showed they were born in Europe or Africa, confirming a trans-Atlantic leap. This shows the species can exploit rare wind corridors to reach new continents, expanding its already global footprint.
• A single female painted lady can lay about 500 eggs, each on a separate host plant, and in the lab researchers have watched up to eight generations hatch in just one year. With each generation producing hundreds of offspring, the butterfly can quickly repopulate new areas after migration. This prodigious reproductive output fuels its ability to colonise fresh habitats and sustain the massive multi-generational migrations it is famous for.
• Adult painted ladies measure 5.1 to 7.3 cm (about 2 inches) from wing tip to tip, a size comparable to a small ruler, and they live roughly a year from egg to death. In the lab, once they emerge as adults they survive only 10 to 24 days, underscoring how quickly they must find food, mates and lay eggs before the end of their brief adult phase.
• Painted lady caterpillars are true generalists, feeding on more than 300 recorded host plants, especially members of the daisy family such as thistles. Their diet includes Cirsium, Carduus, Centaurea, Arctium, Onopordum, Helianthus and Artemisia, giving them the flexibility to thrive in fields, deserts, forests and even urban gardens.
