Fascinating facts about the Osprey

• An osprey's eyes can spot a fish the size of your hand from 40 metres above the water — roughly four times sharper than human vision. When it dives, special valves seal its nostrils shut and a transparent eyelid shields each eye, letting it plunge at 100 km/h without losing sight of prey or taking water up its nose. This is precision engineering built into bone and feather.
• Ospreys are the only raptors on Earth with reversible outer toes — they can point two toes forward and two backward, like an osprey's personal grip system. Paired with spiky foot pads, this lets them clamp fish so slippery they'd slide through any other bird's talons. A 2 kg osprey can carry a 1.5 kg fish back to its nest.
• After DDT pesticide nearly wiped them out in the 1960s — populations crashed to just 500 nesting pairs across North America — osprey populations have rebounded to over 12,000 pairs in the U.S. alone. They became a test case that DDT was finally banned, proving one species' recovery can reshape environmental law for everyone else.
• A breeding osprey pair uses the same nest year after year, adding sticks and debris until it balloons to 2 metres across and weighs as much as a small car — sometimes over 900 kg. One nest in Florida was recorded at 1.8 metres deep and 2.4 metres wide after 35 years of continuous use. The nest outlasts most marriages.
• Osprey chicks stay dependent on their parents for 8 months after hatching — longer than most raptors — and must learn to hunt by watching adults drop dead fish into the water below their nest. Young ospreys have a failure rate of up to 50% on their first 100 hunting attempts. Patience and practice separate the survivors from the starving.
