• Olms can live for more than a century, far outlasting most amphibians of similar size. A Biology Letters study estimated a maximum lifespan over 100 years and an average adult age of about 68.5 years, while another source notes estimates of up to 58 years and wild estimates exceeding 100 years. This extreme longevity shows how a stable, low-temperature underground habitat can dramatically slow metabolism and aging, making the olm a living model for studying lifespan extension.
• Olms can survive a decade without food thanks to massive lipid and glycogen stores. Controlled experiments have shown an olm can survive up to 10 years without eating, while in the wild they reduce activity and metabolic rate, even reabsorbing tissues when starving. This ability lets them endure the nutrient-poor cave waters where prey is scarce, highlighting an extreme adaptation to a resource-limited environment.
• Olms reproduce only once every 12-13 years, laying an average clutch of 35 eggs that can number up to 70. Each egg is about 12 mm in diameter, and embryos develop for 86 days at 15 °C or up to 140 days at 10 °C before hatching.
