• A numbat eats up to 20,000 termites in a single day — roughly one every 5 seconds during daylight hours. Their tongue is longer than their head and coated in sticky saliva, a biological termite vacuum that lets them raid a nest without breaking their teeth. They've traded the venom-resistance most marsupials evolved and instead hunt only in daylight when termites cluster near the surface, the only large marsupial that doesn't hunt at night.
• Unlike every other marsupial in Australia, numbats are born without a pouch. Mothers carry pups in a leather skin-fold for six months, vulnerable in ways other marsupials avoided millions of years ago. This ancient breeding method suggests numbats diverged from the pouch-bearing family tree earlier than any living relative — a living fossil of Australian evolution that shouldn't work, yet does.
• Numbats have 46 teeth, more than any other living marsupial and more even than most dogs. Their back molars are flat grinding stones designed to pulp termite shells, a mouth shaped by 25 million years of eating one food type so thoroughly that they've lost flexibility — a numbat cannot survive on anything but termites and ants. Specialization this extreme means they can exploit a resource no competitor wants, but also means any change in termite populations is catastrophic.
• A numbat produces almost no odour, an evolutionary anomaly among marsupials. This silence in the chemical world made them invisible to Aboriginal tracking dogs for millennia, but it also means predators — wild dogs, foxes — find them by sight alone. Since European colonisation brought foxes to Australia in the 1850s, numbat populations have collapsed from hundreds of thousands to fewer than 1,000 individuals today.
• Numbats are born in December (Australian summer) but don't open their eyes until March. During this three-month window they are utterly helpless inside a shallow burrow, their mother spending entire days away hunting 20,000 termites to fuel milk production. A single fox or dog finding the den kills more numbats than starvation ever could — which is why conservation now focuses less on feeding them and more on fencing and predator control in the few scattered forests where they survive.
