• A northern pike's teeth point backward into its throat — not to chew, but to trap prey like a living fish trap. Once a smaller fish is sucked in by the pike's vacuum-like strike, backward teeth make escape impossible. A pike can swallow a duck whole, and they've been documented eating fish nearly half their own body length.
• Northern pike accelerate from 0 to 24 km/h in under 100 milliseconds — faster than a human blink. They don't chase prey across open water; instead they ambush from weed beds, launching forward with just a flick of their tail. This explosive acceleration works because their muscle is packed with fast-twitch fibers optimized for sudden violence, not endurance.
