Fascinating facts about the Northern Gray-bellied Squirrel
The grey-bellied squirrel occupies a variety of wooded habitats, ranging from natural forests to cultivated plantations and garden spaces across Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, southern Myanmar and the Yunnan province of southern China. Its distribution may also extend into western Laos, although records there are uncertain.
The grey-bellied squirrel now maintains populations on Japan's Ryukyu Islands, a location outside its original Southeast Asian range. Its presence there is the result of an introduction, representing the only confirmed non-native occurrence mentioned for the species.
True to its name, the belly of the grey-bellied squirrel is typically a uniform grey colour, providing a consistent ventral appearance across most individuals. In a minority of squirrels the sides of the belly display a reddish tint, offering a less common variation that can be observed alongside the standard grey.
The grey-bellied squirrel's upper coat is not uniform; it can appear in three distinct shades. Depending on the subspecies and the time of year, the back may be a plain grey, a yellowish-olive tone or a reddish hue. Two adult male grey-bellied squirrels captured in Malaysia weighed just under a quarter of a kilogram each, providing concrete data on the species' size. The first measured 247.7 g and the second 251.5 g, showing a very narrow weight range for adult males in that locality. These figures give a precise benchmark for the typical mass of mature individuals in the wild.
