• A butterfly smaller than a postage stamp depends on a single plant family to survive — the Northern Crescent caterpillar will eat nothing but asters, and only asters. Miss the bloom window in late summer, and there's no next generation. This dietary lock-in makes them invisible to most predators (who've learned aster toxins taste like poison) but leaves them dangerously exposed if drought kills the flowers they're staked on.
• Male Northern Crescents patrol the same 20-metre stretch of dry scrubland every sunny day, flying a figure-eight pattern so precise you could time it by your watch. When a female appears, he chases her at speeds that would tire a hummingbird in seconds — a strategy called 'hilltopping' that works only because the butterfly knows every pebble and grass blade in his territory. Lose your patch to a wildfire, and you've lost your evolutionary playbook.
