Fascinating facts about the Northern Bushbuck
- The northern bushbuck holds the distinction of being the earliest described member of its genus, when Pallas recorded it in 1766 as Antilope scripta from Senegal. That original epithet has been preserved in the modern scientific name, altered only to match grammatical gender. This historical naming links the species directly to its first known specimen and shows the continuity of its taxonomic identity.
- Genetic studies uncovered a striking mismatch between the northern bushbuck's mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, separating the scriptus lineage from the southern sylvaticus group. Hassanin et al. (2018) reported this mtDNA/nuclear DNA discordance, noting that in the nuclear tree scriptus appears as a sister-group to sylvaticus, while its mitochondrial genome carries nyala haplotypes.
- Researchers identified a unique set of chromosomes in the northern bushbuck that trace back to the nyala, indicating past hybridisation. They discovered different karyotypes, with scriptus chromosomes derived from the nyala, and concluded that scriptus, unlike sylvaticus, had interbred with an extinct species closely related to T. angasii in ancient times.
- The northern bushbuck's range extends from the West African coast through the Niger Basin, reaching as far east as the Nile in South Sudan and north-western Angola. Within this vast area it occupies wooded savannas, forest-savanna mosaics, rainforests, montane forests and semi-arid zones. Despite this adaptability it never penetrates the deep rainforests of the central Congo Basin, remaining absent from that region.
- In the Fongoli region of Senegal, western chimpanzees of both sexes occasionally hunt northern bushbucks. When a bushbuck is available they show a clear preference for the young fawns, taking advantage of their vulnerability. This behaviour demonstrates that bushbucks form an opportunistic prey item for these chimpanzees, linking predator and prey dynamics in the local ecosystem.
