• A mountain brush-tailed possum's stomach is a fermentation chamber like a cow's — it can digest leaves that would poison most other mammals. The trick: bacteria in their gut break down tough plant fibres while the possum stays perfectly still for hours, barely moving to conserve energy. This is why they look so sleepy during the day — they're not lazy, they're digesting.
• When a possum gets angry, it makes a sound like a chainsaw cutting through gravel — a snarling, hissing shriek that can be heard 100 metres away in the forest. The noise comes from their throat, not their mouth, and it's designed to make predators think they're far bigger and more dangerous than 2–3 kilograms actually is.
• Their tail is prehensile and covered in a brush of stiff hairs — it works like a fifth limb, curling around branches to grip during falls and helping them balance while they hang upside down to reach fruit. They'll lose half their tail to a predator and still survive; the severed end won't regrow, but they adapt within days.
• Mountain brush-tailed possums are one of the few marsupials that live in permanent family groups — a mother, her adult daughters, and their young all nest together in the same tree hollow for years. Unlike most possums that are solitary, these family units act like a multi-generational household, with older females teaching younger ones which trees have the best leaves.
• In the 1920s, possums were introduced to New Zealand as the start of a fur trade that never took off. Now there are 70 million brush-tailed possums (including cousins of the mountain variety) in New Zealand and none in most of their original Australian range — they've become an invasive species destroying native forests at a scale that dwarfs their impact back home.
