- The Mexican spiny pocket mouse packs a head-body length of about 12 cm (4.7 in) and a tail almost the same size, making it a medium-sized member of its genus. Its coat blends stiff spines with soft hairs, but the flat-lying hairs let the spines dominate the appearance. Uniquely among its relatives, the soles of its feet bear five tubercles instead of the usual six, a trait that helps researchers tell it apart from other Heteromys species.
- When danger flashes, this tiny rodent can spring forward like a miniature kangaroo, covering 1.5 metres (5 feet) in a single second. That leaping gait is the fastest of its four locomotion methods, letting it zip across open ground to escape predators or reach scattered seed caches.
