• A Mediterranean mantis can rotate its head 270 degrees — nearly three-quarters of a full circle — without moving its body. This gives it a 340-degree field of vision that leaves only a blind spot directly behind. That's how it hunts: lock eyes on a fly, wait motionless for days if needed, then strike in 50 milliseconds — faster than you can blink. The prey never sees it coming.
• Mantis eyes work like nothing else on Earth. Each compound eye has a region called a fovea — the same structure humans use to read — which gives them the sharpest vision of any insect. They can spot movement from 2 metres away in dim light. They're also one of the few insects that see in colour and perceive depth the way we do, crucial for judging the exact distance to a moving target.
• When a Mediterranean mantis nymph hatches, it's a clone of the adult — just 6 millimetres long instead of 6 centimetres.
