This setup costs them: they can't see directly below, so they spiral down before the final dive to keep their prey in view.
• The masked booby's feet glow neon blue, and males wave them in the air during courtship like someone showing off new trainers. These electric-coloured webbed feet are packed with blood vessels that dump heat, a cooling system for a bird that lives on equatorial islands where ground temperature can exceed 50°C.
