About the Maroon-bellied Parakeet

The maroon-bellied parakeet, Pyrrhura frontalis, is a compact, 25-to-28 cm green parrot whose most striking feature is a deep maroon patch that sweeps across its belly and a matching maroon undertail. Its breast and neck are patterned with a scaly, yellow-green bar, while a whitish ear-patch, often tinged brown, frames a dark frontlet that gives the species its name. The wings flash blue on the outer primaries and green on the inner, and the tail varies between subspecies: the nominate frontalis shows a greenish-yellow tail tipped with a broad reddish hue, whereas chiripepe ends in a plain greenish-yellow. In the wild these birds flit through the forest edges and woodlands of southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, Uruguay, and north-eastern Argentina, favoring highland habitats up to 1,400 m in the north and lowlands below 1,000 m elsewhere. They are remarkably adaptable, nesting in disturbed forest fragments, urban parks of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and even garden plantings where fruiting trees abound. Feeding in small flocks of six to twelve, occasionally swelling to forty, these parrots nibble on fruits, blossoms, and other plant matter, rarely joining mixed-species foraging groups. A surprising trait is their modest vocal repertoire: unlike many conures, they are among the quietest, though their shrill calls can still provoke irritation in city dwellers, and a few individuals can learn to mimic speech, albeit imperfectly.
