• The marbled orbweaver is dubbed the pumpkin spider because the female's swollen abdomen resembles an orange pumpkin. This nickname comes from the striking orange-coloured abdomen that can reach up to 14 mm in length and appears almost spherical. The typical colour form shows an orange background with brown-to-black marbling, reinforcing the pumpkin-like impression. The name therefore directly reflects the spider's distinctive body shape.
• This spider stays hidden in a silken retreat tucked at the end of its signal thread rather than in the centre of the web. Its vertical web includes a specialised signal line that vibrates when prey is caught, alerting the spider inside the retreat. The retreat may be constructed from folded leaves bound with silk, from silk alone, or hidden beneath debris, providing camouflage.
• Its egg cocoons hold several hundred eggs and are laid in October, each formed from white silk into a flattened sphere. The cocoons are attached in sheltered spots and hatch in spring, releasing immature spiders that grow through the summer. Adults then appear from midsummer and remain active until the first hard freeze of autumn. This seasonal cycle ensures the next generation is ready to overwinter as eggs.
• The marbled orbweaver is found across the Holarctic, stretching from North America through Europe to Japan. In North America its range includes all of Canada to Alaska, the northern Rockies, and extends from North Dakota south to Texas before reaching the Atlantic coast. It favours moist, wooded settings such as trees, shrubs, tall weeds and grasses near streams where it builds its vertical webs.
• Adult female marbled orbweavers can grow to a body length of 14 mm or more, their abdomen becoming a very large oval that looks almost spherical. One common colour form shows an orange abdomen marked with brown-to-black marbling, often highlighted by a distinct folium with dark edging. Another form displays a paler abdomen with a single dark, reddish-brown rear mark, showing the species' wide colour variation.
