• A marbled orbweaver can rebuild an entire 2-metre-wide web in under an hour — using silk five times stronger than steel of the same thickness. The spider produces seven different silks from separate glands, each engineered for a different job: the frame needs rigidity, the spiral needs stickiness, the anchor threads need elasticity. A single web contains between 20 and 60 metres of silk, all spun from a creature the size of a grape.
• The female marbled orbweaver is typically twice the size of the male — a gap so extreme that when he approaches her web, she's more likely to eat him than mate with him. He solves this by plucking the web like a guitar, sending vibrations that mimic the signature of a trapped insect. If he gets the rhythm wrong, she attacks. He has one chance to court her before winter, and the stakes are literally survival.
• A marbled orbweaver's web is invisible to the insects that die in it because those insects see ultraviolet light differently than we do. The silk absorbs UV wavelengths, making it nearly invisible to flies and gnats that navigate by UV reflection from flowers. The spider itself often sits head-down at the web's centre, camouflaged against her own creation until prey arrives.
• In autumn, female marbled orbweavers change colour — from pale yellow to deep burgundy or orange — in response to falling temperatures and changing light. This shift happens over weeks and is controlled by their nervous system, not their diet. Scientists still don't fully understand why, but it may help them blend with autumn vegetation or regulate heat absorption as nights grow colder.
• The marbled orbweaver lays between 100 and 400 eggs in a single papery, marble-patterned egg sac attached to bark or a building — the sac that gives the spider its name. She guards it until the first hard frost, then dies. The spiderlings overwinter inside the sac and emerge in spring to disperse on silk threads caught by the wind, some travelling kilometres from where they hatched.
