Fascinating facts about the Lowland Slender Squirrel
Measuring just 13-16 cm from nose to base of tail, the slender squirrel. Its body length places it roughly between the size of a standard pencil and a small ruler, while the tail is only slightly shorter. This compact build lets it zip through narrow branches in the dense canopies of Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
When Singapore built the Eco-Link@BKE in 2013, cameras captured slender squirrels crossing the vegetated overpass, proving the bridge works for tiny arboreal mammals. The bridge, a 62-metre vegetated span, was intended to reconnect the Bukit Timah and Central Catchment reserves after a six-lane highway split them. Sightings of Sundasciurus tenuis on the bridge show that even the smallest forest dwellers can use engineered corridors, highlighting the bridge's role in restoring movement pathways for a broad suite of species.
The $12.3 million Eco-Link@BKE was designed to of two major Singapore reserves. By providing two metres of soil and native trees, the bridge creates a forest strip high enough for squirrels to run along, effectively turning a concrete barrier into a living corridor. The presence of slender squirrels on the bridge demonstrates that the investment is paying off for forest-dependent fauna, offering a template for future wildlife overpasses in rapidly developing regions.
