- Males can reach a length of three metres and weigh up to 150 kg, making them the largest living lizard. Their extraordinary size places them at the top of the food chain, allowing them to dominate the ecosystems they inhabit. In the wild an average adult male measures about 2.59 m and weighs between 79 and 91 kg, while the biggest recorded wild individual measured 3.04 m and weighed 81.5 kg, underscoring the species' impressive dimensions.
- Komodo dragons renew their teeth every 40 days, keeping up to five spare teeth behind each slot. This rapid turnover ensures they always have sharp, serrated ziphodont teeth up to 2.5 cm long for slicing flesh. The high replacement rate mirrors that of the crocodile monitor, highlighting a shared adaptation among large monitor lizards. Their constantly refreshed dentition supports their role as efficient apex predators.
- By flicking its long, yellow, deeply forked tongue and using the wind, a Komodo dragon can smell dead meat from up to 9.5 km away. It directs scent particles to the Jacobson's organ via the tongue, allowing detection of carrion over several kilometres.
