• A Komodo dragon's bite delivers roughly 60 pounds of force — less than a crocodile's, but the real weapon is a cocktail of toxins and bacteria flooding from glands in its lower jaw. These venom compounds drop prey blood pressure, paralyse muscles, and trigger shock within minutes. A 10-pound deer can be dead before it stops running.
• The largest living lizard on Earth weighs up to 150 kg and stretches 3 metres — longer than a man is tall — yet they evolved on islands smaller than London. Scientists believe they descended from Australian monitor lizards that arrived millions of years ago, then grew massive because there were no competing predators. Island dwarfism usually shrinks animals. Komodos went the opposite direction.
• A Komodo can swallow a whole goat the size of a cocker spaniel, then not eat again for weeks. Their metabolism runs so slowly that a 100 kg dragon needs only about 11,000 calories per year — roughly what a human eats in 5 days. This patience is why they're ambush hunters: they can wait motionless for hours, burning almost nothing.
• Fewer than 3,000 Komodo dragons exist in the wild, all confined to five Indonesian islands. A 1974 volcanic eruption on Flores nearly wiped them out completely. Today they're trapped on shrinking reserves, competing with introduced feral horses and pigs for dwindling deer populations. Their entire species occupies less space than a large city.
• Female Komodos can reproduce without males — a process called parthenogenesis where unfertilised eggs develop into clones. Scientists discovered this in 2006 when a captive dragon laid fertile eggs alone. In the wild, this ability may have been a survival strategy on isolated islands, but it also means all-female lineages lose genetic diversity with every generation, pushing the species closer to extinction.
