• A keeled skimmer can spot a mosquito the size of a grain of rice from 12 metres away — then pivot 90 degrees mid-flight and catch it without slowing down. Their eyes wrap almost completely around their head, giving them vision in nearly every direction at once. This 360-degree awareness lets them hunt while dodging predators, a precision that makes them one of Europe's most lethal aerial hunters.
• Male keeled skimmers turn an electric blue as they mature, a colour shift powered by a waxy coating that forms over their exoskeleton — not pigment, but structure. This same coating lets them absorb heat faster than other dragonflies, meaning they can hunt on cooler mornings when rivals are still sluggish. First to warm up wins the territory.
• During mating, a male keeled skimmer clasps the female in a tandem position and flies her over water at dusk. The pair dip and touch-down repeatedly — she's laying eggs while airborne, releasing hundreds into the water. The whole performance takes less than an hour but sets up a generation that will emerge as nymphs in 1–2 years.
• A keeled skimmer nymph spends most of its life (12–24 months) hunting underwater, ambushing tadpoles and insect larvae with a hinged lower jaw that shoots out faster than a human eye can follow. The transformation from aquatic predator to aerial one happens in a single moult — wings unfold, air sacs inflate, and a creature built for water becomes a creature built for sky.
• Keeled skimmers were absent from much of northern Europe until the 1990s, then began spreading northward — now they're found in Britain, Scandinavia, and Russia. Climate warming is expanding their breeding season and pushing the edge of their range further north by 1–2 degrees of latitude per decade. They're a living barometer of how fast European summers are changing.
