Goodwin, but only after the 2010 analysis was its full species status widely accepted.
- Goodwin named the bat after the country where its holotype was collected near San José, Honduras, giving it the species epithet hondurensis. The name is Latin for "belonging to Honduras", directly linking the taxon to its type locality. This choice reflects the importance of the specimen's origin in the formal description and helps distinguish it from related taxa.
