• A Gulf Fritillary caterpillar eats nothing but passionflower leaves—and the plant fights back by producing cyanide compounds. The caterpillar doesn't just survive the poison; it stores it in its body, becoming toxic to predators. This defence is so effective that birds learn to recognize the butterfly's orange and black wings as a warning sign and leave it alone. The butterfly essentially weaponizes its host plant against the world.
• The Gulf Fritillary's wingspan barely exceeds 7 centimetres, yet it migrates across the entire Gulf of Mexico in a single flight. Butterflies heading north in spring must cross 900 kilometres of open water without landing, powered only by nectar reserves and wind patterns. In response, Gulf Fritillary mothers have evolved the ability to recognize fake eggs and avoid wasting hundreds of eggs on plants already claimed by rivals.
