• Gray whales stretch up to 15.2 m (50 ft) long and can weigh as much as 45 tonnes, making them the ninth-largest cetacean on Earth. Newborns arrive at 4.6 m and 500-600 kg, then grow to adult sizes of 11-15.2 m, with females slightly larger than males. Their lifespan ranges from 55 to 70 years, though a female was once estimated at 75-80 years old.
• Each year gray whales travel between 16,000 km and 22,530 km, one of the longest migrations of any mammal. They move from icy Arctic feeding grounds in the Bering and Chukchi Seas to warm calving lagoons off Baja California, covering the distance in a steady 4.8-9.6 km/h cruise.
• The eastern Pacific stock once numbered about 27,000 whales in 2016, but by 2025 it had plummeted to roughly 13,000 individuals. The crash was driven by mass starvation, malnutrition and calving failure linked to warming Arctic waters, with calf births dropping by 95 %.
• Gray whales are the only large cetaceans that feed primarily on the seafloor, scooping up mud and sand to filter out amphipods, ghost shrimp, polychaete worms, herring eggs and other tiny creatures. Their short, cream-colored baleen plates trap the prey while the sediment is expelled, creating huge mud plumes that later become feeding pits for birds and fish. By turning over the ocean bottom, they aerate the soil and boost biodiversity, acting as living tillers of the marine landscape.
• Gray whales reach sexual maturity between ages 6 and 12, with females typically entering oestrus in late November to early December. After a 13-14 month gestation, a single calf, born weighing 500-600 kg and measuring about 4.6 m, clings to its mother for up to seven months, relying on rich milk reserves built during the summer feeding season. This tightly timed breeding cycle ties the whales to both their Arctic feeding grounds and the warm, shallow lagoons where calves first learn to breathe.
