Fascinating facts about the Grey Whale

• A grey whale swallows 130 tons of sediment to suck up half a ton of food. They dive to the ocean floor, suck in a mouthful of mud and krill together, then filter the sediment back out through baleen plates — a feeding technique so efficient that no other whale evolved it. Their stomach lining is lined with thick, corrugated tissue that shields it from the sandpaper-rough sediment. Only grey whales feed this way, which is why they're the only whales with baleen designed for bottom-feeding rather than filtering open water.
• The grey whale holds the record for the longest migration of any mammal on Earth — 12,400 miles round trip every year, taking five months each way. A newborn calf makes this journey at just a few weeks old, relying on its mother's milk to fuel a swim equal to circling the equator halfway. By the time a grey whale dies at 50 or 60 years old, it will have swum the distance to the Moon and back, twice.
• In 1850, whalers called them 'devilfish' because mothers would ram boats to protect calves — and the whalers were right to be terrified. A mother grey whale weighing 40 tons moving at 6 miles per hour can splinter wood and crush a whaling boat instantly. The relationship between human and grey whale is one of the few in nature where both parties remember the other with something close to genuine antagonism.
• Grey whales were hunted so close to extinction by 1946 that fewer than 1,000 remained alive. An international whaling ban allowed them to rebound to 27,000 today — one of conservation's few unambiguous successes. But climate change is now starving them on their Arctic feeding grounds; since 2019, unusually warm water has triggered multiple die-offs, with thousands washing ashore malnourished. We brought them back from the brink only to face a new crisis we didn't create alone.
• A grey whale's 50-foot-long body is a moving ecosystem. Hundreds of thousands of whale lice, amphipods, and barnacles live permanently on its skin, some species found nowhere else on Earth. The white and gray patches that give the whale its name aren't natural pigment — they're scars from parasites and battles, a living record of age and survival written across their hide in barnacle clusters and skin lesions.
