• A grey rhebok weighs just 7–9 kg — lighter than a newborn human — yet it survives on South Africa's steepest mountain grasslands where larger antelope cannot. Its needle-thin legs and hunched posture work like shock absorbers on near-vertical slopes, allowing it to leap 6 metres vertically up rock faces that would stop a human climber. This is the only antelope built for high-altitude isolation rather than speed.
• When threatened, a grey rhebok doesn't bolt in a straight line like other antelope. Instead it bounces stiff-legged up the mountainside in a pattern called 'stotting' — each jump a 90-centimetre pogo-stick bounce that wastes energy but signals to predators: I am too nimble to catch here. A caracal or leopard learns quickly that chasing one upslope is futile.
• Grey rheboks are almost silent herbivores that spend their entire lives in a territory smaller than 8 hectares — often on a single peak. A pair will defend the same mountain slope for years, their presence marked only by a faint whistling snort when disturbed.
