- Only male grey rheboks grow horns, which are straight, sharp and ringed at the base, measuring roughly 15-25 centimetres in length. The species is a medium-sized antelope, with adults weighing between 19 and 30 kilograms. Females lack any horn growth, making the presence of horns a reliable way to tell the sexes apart. This sexual dimorphism is noted across its range in South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini.
- Grey rheboks are usually found in grassy, montane habitats such as sourveld, typically at about 1 000 metres above sea level where their woolly grey coat provides insulation against the cold. This preference keeps them largely confined to the higher regions of Southern Africa, although they are not strictly limited to those elevations.

- The grey rhebok is listed as Near Threatened after its numbers fell by about 20 % over three generations in thirteen protected areas between 1999 and 2014. The decline was recorded across its range, with the largest protected subpopulation in Maloti-Drakensberg Park losing an estimated 15-20 % of individuals. These losses have contributed to local extinctions in several provinces and the species' precarious status today.
