• A caterpillar that tastes with its feet makes a choice that will poison it for life. Female green-veined whites lay eggs only on mustard, cabbage, and broccoli — plants loaded with glucosinolates, sulfur compounds that taste bitter to most insects. The caterpillar eats these toxins, stores them in its body, and wears them like armour: by the time it becomes a butterfly, predators have learned that green-veined whites taste foul. This strategy works so well that the butterfly advertises it with white wings and dark veins — essentially a warning label with wings.
• At just 18 millimetres across, this butterfly is half the size of a postage stamp, yet it crosses mountains and entire countries every spring. Green-veined whites in northern Europe migrate south in autumn, then their offspring migrate north again the following spring — a journey spanning thousands of kilometres. No compass in their three-millimetre brain, yet they navigate by the sun's angle and Earth's magnetic field with enough precision to return to meadows their parents never visited.
• Within 24 hours of emerging from its cocoon, a male green-veined white has already mated — and he's been dead for a week. Males die within days, having invested everything into finding and courting females. Females live 3 to 4 times longer, spending their extended lives hunting for host plants and laying eggs. In a single season, one female can lay 200 eggs, spreading her genes across a meadow while males are already decomposing.
• The white pigment on these butterfly wings isn't there by accident — it's a solar panel. Unlike most insects that absorb only dark wavelengths, green-veined whites have evolved brilliant white scales that reflect nearly all incoming light while trapping a thin layer of air underneath. This dual design lets them warm up in cool spring mornings 40 per cent faster than darker butterflies, giving them an edge in short-season northern habitats where every sunny day counts.
• Climate change is rewriting the caterpillar's calendar, and the butterfly may be outpaced. As springs arrive earlier, host plants leaf out before the generations of green-veined whites emerge from winter dormancy. In some regions, the timing mismatch has already widened — caterpillars hatch to find only tough, mature leaves instead of tender growth. Populations in Britain and Scandinavia are showing earlier emergence, but the shift varies by location, creating a patchwork of winners and losers in a landscape rewired by warming.
