Even a child can spot this frog's size: it reaches 10 cm (4 in) or more, and some individuals grow up to 11.5 cm (4.5 in), larger than most Australian frogs. In captivity it lives about 16 years, a span far beyond typical frogs, and a few lucky specimens have even topped 20 years.
The frog's skin is a tiny pharmacy: its parotoid gland secretes 25 caerins, peptides that fight bacteria and viruses, and also caeruleins that act like the hunger-suppressing hormone CCK-8. Laboratory tests show these secretions can destroy HIV without harming healthy T cells and even protect against the deadly chytrid fungus. This chemical armor explains why the species stays abundant while others crash.
Spanning roughly 4,078,600 km² (1,574,800 mi²), the green tree frog inhabits northern and eastern Australia and the lowland jungles of New Guinea, thriving in warm, wet climates. Humans have moved it beyond its home: tiny populations now linger in two Florida locales, while earlier releases in New Zealand vanished after the 1950s. Its massive native range and adaptability keep it listed as "least concern" on the IUCN Red List.
When breeding season arrives, a male summons mates from a perch, then the female drops clutches of 200-2000 eggs that float for a day before sinking. Each egg is a tiny 1.1-1.4 mm sphere.
