At just under half a meter long, the greater crested tern rivals a small pigeon: the breeding adult of the nominate subspecies measures 46-49 cm (18-19.5 in) and spreads its wings to 125-130 cm (49-51 in), while weighing 325-397 g (11.5-14.0 oz). Its bill, a striking yellow, stretches 5.4-6.5 cm (2.1-2.6 in).
The Gulf of Carpentaria hosts the world's biggest gathering of these terns, with 13,000 to 15,000 breeding pairs nesting side-by-side. Such a massive colony, comparable to a small town, appears only after the summer monsoonal floods, suggesting the birds time their arrival to the surge of fish that the nutrient-rich runoff brings. This link between flood-driven productivity and breeding density shows how tightly the species' success is tied to coastal ecosystem health.
Young greater crested terns are true long-distance travelers: after fledging, many head eastward, sometimes covering more than 2,000 km (1,200 mi) across the Indian Ocean, while others move north along the western African coast. Even the more sedentary subspecies can wander up to 1,000 km (620 mi) from their colonies.
Counting these birds from the sky is far more reliable than on the ground: researchers placed 10 fake tern colonies of 463-1,017 decoys each and compared ground observers with UAV-derived images. The aerial counts were 43-96 % more accurate, and when image quality was high the improvement rose to 92-98 %. This precision, plus a permanent photographic record, means future researchers can re-analyse data without disturbing the birds.
