- The gold dust day gecko originally inhabits northern Madagascar, the Comoro Islands and the Mascarene Islands, but humans have carried it far beyond its native range. It has been introduced to Hawaii and other Pacific islands where it remains primarily arboreal and may associate with human dwellings.
- Male gold dust day geckos are rather aggressive. They do not accept other males in their territory.
- When kept in captivity, male gold dust day geckos can become dangerously aggressive toward females that cannot flee. The confined environment prevents the female from escaping, and the male may seriously wound her as a result of his territorial nature. This risk is highlighted by observations that males may also seriously wound a female in such settings. Owners therefore need to provide ample space or separate sexes to avoid injury.
- Gold dust day geckos are opportunistic feeders that hunt a range of arthropods and will even overpower tiny lizards when the chance arises. Their diet is not limited to protein; they also seek out soft, sweet fruit as well as pollen and nectar from blooming flowers. When a flowering plant is abundant, many individuals gather together, all feeding from the same source. This varied menu supports their active, diurnal lifestyle.
