• A giant otter's scream can be heard from a kilometre away — a shriek so piercing that jaguars and anacondas avoid them on sight. When a pup goes missing, the whole family calls for hours. Their vocalisation is so complex researchers are still decoding what each whistle, grunt, and bark means.
• Giant otters have a metabolism that burns fuel so fast they must eat 3.5 kg of fish every single day — roughly 15% of their body weight — just to stay alive. A 30 kg otter consumes more food per day than a 90 kg jaguar.
