• Gentoo penguins reaching 70 to 90 cm, making them the third-largest penguin species. Males can bulk up to 8.5 kg before moult and drop to about 4.9 kg when mating, while females top out at 8.2 kg and can fall to 4.5 kg while guarding chicks. Birds from the north average 700 g heavier and 10 cm longer than their southern cousins, whose length caps at 75-80 cm. Underwater they are the speed champions of the penguin world, sprinting to 36 km/h (22 mph).
• Over a ten-year span (2012-2022) gentoo colonies on the Antarctic Peninsula began nesting an average of 13 days earlier, with some sites jumping more than three weeks forward. This shift is among the most extreme recorded for any bird, and it outpaces the 10.4-day and 10.2-day advances seen in chinstrap and Adélie penguins. Researchers link the change to warming temperatures and shrinking sea ice, warning that mismatches with prey timing could jeopardise chick survival. The advance also lets gentoos claim nesting spots before their rivals, potentially squeezing out other species as ice-free ground stays limited.
• Gentoo diets swing dramatically with the seasons. From February to March crustaceans (krill and shrimp) make up about 10 % of what they eat, but by March-June that share rockets to roughly 75 %. When winter rolls in (June-October) grey rockcod dominate, providing 90 % of meals, while cephalopods stay steady at just 10 % year-round. This flexibility lets gentoos exploit shallow, fish-rich waters.
• Because their prey are as salty as seawater, gentoo chicks face a sodium overload. To flush the excess, gentoos grow a large salt gland perched above each eye; the organ concentrates the salt into a briny solution that drips from the tip of the beak. This physiological hack lets them eat seawater-laden meals, a crucial adaptation for surviving in the icy, salt-saturated Southern Ocean.
• Gentoo nests are built from piles of stones up to 20 cm high and 25 cm across, and a single medium-sized nest can hold more than 1,700 pebbles. Stones are fiercely defended; owners will hiss, jab with their bills, or even wrestle rivals to keep their stash. Females often choose mates based on the quality of the stone offering, and a male can win a partner by presenting a prized pebble. This stone-centric courtship shows how even tiny rocks become currency in the battle for reproductive success.
