Fascinating facts about the Gentoo Penguin

• Gentoo Penguins are pursuit divers that can make up to 450 dives in a single day, spending as much as 80% of their time at sea. Each dive averages just over a minute, but they can stay submerged for up to 7 minutes when hunting krill and fish at depth.
• Unlike most penguins, Gentoos don't have a fixed breeding season tied to migration — they breed close to their feeding grounds year-round in the Falkland Islands. Different subpopulations have shifted their breeding timing by up to 6 weeks in recent years as climate change warms their habitat.
• The pebble courtship ritual is fiercely competitive — males that present the smoothest, roundest stones are preferred by females. Pebble theft between rivals is so endemic that colonies essentially operate a black market economy in stones throughout the breeding season.
• Gentoo Penguins communicate through a "trumpeting" call unique to each individual. Mates can recognise each other's calls within a colony of thousands of penguins in seconds of arrival — even after weeks apart at sea.

About the Gentoo Penguin

The Gentoo Penguin is the third-largest penguin species and one of the most widespread, found on the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula. Instantly recognisable by the white patch above each eye connected by a white band across the top of the head, and a bright orange-red bill and feet, it is one of the most visually striking penguins. Unlike relatives that migrate vast distances, the Gentoo is largely sedentary — it breeds close to where it feeds, making it a key indicator species for the health of sub-Antarctic marine ecosystems. The fastest penguin underwater, it hunts krill, squid, and fish with remarkable agility.
