• When threatened, a frilled-neck lizard inflates a large, pleated membrane around its head, a collar of skin supported by cartilage rods that extends to twice the width of its body. The frill flips open in less than a second, revealing bright colours underneath, a startling display designed to make the lizard look suddenly larger and more dangerous. This defense works because most predators are wired to flee from sudden size changes; the lizard exploits that instinct rather than fighting back.
• The frilled-neck lizard of New Guinea's highlands belongs to a lineage that hasn't changed much in over 20 million years, it is a living fossil that survived the ice ages by staying in the stable rainforest while other reptiles died out around it.
