• A bug wearing a warning label that walks. The European firebug's red-and-black pattern is so universally recognized across Europe that predators learn to avoid it before they even encounter their first one—a living billboard that says 'don't eat me' without a single encounter. This strategy, called aposematism, works so well that harmless insects sometimes copy the exact same colours to trick predators into leaving them alone.
• Firebugs gather in groups of thousands, stacked on top of each other like a writhing red-and-black carpet. In spring, they cluster on sunny spots—tree trunks, rocks, walls—partly to absorb heat together and partly because they're drawn to the same chemicals their neighbours are releasing. A single pile can contain 5,000 individuals, all humming with body heat in a living heap that looks like something from a fever dream.
• They have been ground zero for a global plague. In the 1990s, a fungus called Beauveria bassiana jumped into firebug populations across Europe and exploded. In some years and regions, the fungus killed up to 80% of the population before it died back—a natural pesticide so effective that scientists now study it as a biological control tool for pest species.
• These insects have weaponized their diet. Firebugs feed on seeds and fruits, extracting compounds that many plants evolved as poisons. Instead of dying, they store those toxins in their own bodies, which they advertise with their warning colours. A predator that ignores the red-and-black pattern and bites one gets a mouthful of chemical nasty—the bug essentially carries its food's defense system as its own armour.
• Firebugs can survive on a diet that would starve almost everything else. They can extract nutrition from seeds containing chemicals that make most insects sick, and they can go weeks without feeding if the weather turns cold. This ability to live on low-quality food in harsh conditions is why they thrive across an enormous range from the Atlantic to northwest China—they can survive where pickier insects starve.
