• Most dabbling ducks dive for food underwater. Eurasian wigeons don't—they've abandoned the water almost entirely and spend hours grazing on land like geese, stealing grass from meadows and lakeside pastures. Their short, broad bills are sculpted for clipping vegetation, not filtering mud. This dietary shift is so extreme that they often compete more with sheep than with other ducks, and it means they can thrive on shallow marshes where diving ducks would starve.
• A male Eurasian wigeon in breeding plumage is unmistakable: a chestnut head and ivory crown that looks airbrushed on. Birders call them 'red and whites' for this exact reason. The contrast works because of their winter travels—they breed in the Arctic tundra from Scandinavia to Siberia, then abandon the frozen north entirely for milder coasts and inland waters across Europe and Asia, a journey of thousands of kilometres each way.

This behaviour is so reliable that ornithologists use wigeon presence as an indicator of where other duck species are feeding—they're the meadow-following cousins of the underwater crowd.
• A single Eurasian wigeon weighs between 450 and 700 grams—less than a standard coffee mug. Yet they fly non-stop across thousands of kilometres of open water twice a year, from breeding grounds in the Arctic to wintering sites in the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Indian subcontinent. Their light frame and narrow wings are built for sustained flight over impossible distances, burning fat reserves that can account for up to 40 percent of their body mass before migration begins.
• The global population hovers around 3 million birds, making them common across their vast range—but this stability masks a grinding pressure from habitat loss. The wet grasslands they depend on for breeding in the Arctic are drying faster as permafrost thaws and human agriculture expands. In their wintering grounds, coastal wetlands are being drained for development.
