Female Eurasian eagle-owls can stretch to 75 cm (30 in) long with a wingspan of 188 cm (6 ft 2 in), and weigh up to 4.6 kg (10.1 lb), dwarfing the barn owl's 0.5 kg frame. Their massive bodies and relatively tiny wings give them a wing-loading of 0.72 g/cm².
Spanning roughly 51.4 million km² (19.8 million sq mi) across Europe and Asia, the Eurasian eagle-owl occupies one of the world's broadest ranges for a single owl species. Yet its global population is estimated at only 100,000-500,000 individuals, a figure that is slowly declining. Such a vast footprint with relatively few birds makes each individual a critical link in controlling rodent numbers over huge tracts of land, underscoring why habitat loss can ripple through entire ecosystems.
Eagle-owls lay a clutch of 2-4 eggs in a shallow scrape on cliffs or rocky ledges, then both parents tend the young for about five months. The female incubates while the male delivers prey, and after hatching the chicks are brooded for two weeks before fending for themselves. By week five they can walk, and after roughly 60 days they attempt their first short flights, staying in the nest area until autumn.
In the wild, Eurasian eagle-owls live roughly 20 years, but some individuals surpass 60 years in captivity, highlighting their potential longevity when threats are minimized. As apex predators, they sit at the top of their food chain, keeping rodent populations in check. Removing them can cause rodent numbers to surge, demonstrating their role as a keystone species that stabilizes the balance of many Eurasian ecosystems.
A single middle talon of a large female can reach 57.9 mm (2.28 in), matching the size of a golden-eagle's hallux-claw. Though owls usually kill by constriction rather than talon-driven wounds, expanding its diet beyond typical rodent fare and reinforcing its status as a versatile top predator.
