Elegant Grass-Veneer

Fascinating facts about the Elegant Grass-Veneer

• First catalogued in 1860 by James Brackenridge Clemens, this tiny moth measures just 12-15 mm across its silvery-white wings. Its forewings sport a stark "Halloween-mask" design: two triangular "eyes", a down-curved "mouth", and a row of seven black dots along the lower edge. Such bold markings on a creature no larger than a fingernail.
• In the northern part of its range, adults take to the air only between June and August, squeezing a single generation into a brief summer window. Farther south, the season stretches from March to October, allowing several generations to develop.
• Spanning from the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec down to Florida, and westward to Texas, Kansas, and Illinois, the elegant grass-veneer.
• When at rest, the moth folds its wings tightly together, forming a tube-like shape. This posture, combined with its threadlike antennae and long, hairy tympanal organs that give a snout-like appearance, is a classic trait of the Crambinae subfamily.
• One generation per year in the north, but multiple broods down south. Adults take to the air from June to August in places like Ontario and Maine, yet in Florida they buzz from March all the way to October. This seasonal flexibility shows how the species exploits longer warm periods to boost its numbers where the climate allows.
