• A male eastern bluebird's chest glows so intensely blue that it shifts shade depending on the angle of light — a trick called structural colour, created by microscopic ridges on his feathers that scatter blue wavelengths like a prism. This isn't pigment; it's physics. Females see these colour shifts and use them to judge a male's health: the more vivid the blue at every angle, the better his genes. A dull, flat-looking male? She'll reject him.
• Eastern bluebirds hunt by watching. They perch on a fence or branch, spot movement in the grass 20 metres away, drop silently to grab an insect, and return to the same post — sometimes 50 times in an hour. In winter when insects vanish, they shift entirely to fruit and can identify a berry-laden bush from 30 metres up, then navigate straight to it through bare branches. This switch from insect to fruit diet happens in weeks, not generations.
• Nest boxes saved this species from extinction. In the 1960s, populations had collapsed to a few thousand pairs across eastern North America — competition with starlings and sparrows for natural cavities had nearly erased them. Since then, citizens have built and maintained over 100,000 nest boxes. Today the population has rebounded to roughly 8 million birds. Few animals owe their survival so directly to human intervention.
• A pair of eastern bluebirds can raise three broods in a single breeding season, fledging up to 15 chicks from February to September. The male feeds the first brood while the female rebuilds the nest and lays eggs for the second. If conditions are good — abundant insects, mild weather — some pairs nest again while their oldest chicks are still learning to hunt. This reproductive pace is punishing but works only in years when food doesn't run short.
• Eastern bluebirds navigate during migration using the Earth's magnetic field, detected by a protein called cryptochrome in their eyes that literally lets them see magnetic lines. Research shows they can sense field strength and angle simultaneously, giving them a biological GPS accurate enough to return to the same 2-hectare territory year after year — some birds have been recaptured at the same nest box after 10 winters away.
